Below Surfaces

Is it enough
the few times that I breathe deeply
those scant traces of deeper roots
only sometimes felt

Is it enough
this once-in-a-while probing
of what might be significant
tasting mere suggestions

At the surface here
I hardly dip my toes
At the surface here
I skitter insect-like with eyes averted
ignoring the depths below

Depths to consume me
were I self-permitted
to slip into the cool wet water

It is me
with my conscious act
turning the glass-like surface
upon which I tread
from hard to liquid
taking a dive

Me entering an alternative condition
leaving safe well-trod circumstance
finding the substitute with yawning possibilities

Being swallowed up by myself
